Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s rich art and cultural heritage found global recognition at the world’s largest democratic conference, International Institute of Democracy and Election Management Conference (IICDEM-2026), held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from January 21 to 23.
Organised by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the international conference witnessed participation from delegations representing more than 70 countries. As part of a special international cultural exchange initiative, Odisha’s world-renowned Pattachitra paintings were showcased and presented as cultural gifts to chief representatives from over 40 countries.
The exquisite artworks depicted Lord Shri Krishna’s divine Raslila and the various majestic beshas (attires) of Mahaprabhu Jagannath, symbolising India’s spiritual depth and artistic excellence. Crafted using natural colours on cloth, the paintings reflected Odisha’s centuries-old scroll-painting tradition.
According to officials, the inclusion of Pattachitra at the global forum was inspired by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s visit to Odisha in December 2025. During his visit to the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri and the Sun Temple at Konark, the CEC also toured Raghurajpur village in Puri district, where he was deeply impressed by the skill and dedication of the traditional artisans. The visit prompted the decision to feature Pattachitra at the world-level conference.
Dating back to the 10th century, Pattachitra remains a living tradition in Odisha and continues to gain admiration on international platforms. The showcasing of the art form at IICDEM-2026 has significantly enhanced the state’s cultural pride, the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Odisha, said in a statement.
From Odisha, State Chief Electoral Officer R S Gopalan, Additional CEO Susant Kumar Mishra, Deputy CEOs Laxmiprasad Sahu and Anamika Singh, and Finance Advisor Sanjay Kumar Lugun attended the conference.
