Bhubaneswar: A group of women from eight self-help groups (SHGs) have become the saviours of the magnificent Midubanda Waterfall, near Daringbadi hill station.
This scenic spot attracts thousands of tourists from across the state and beyond, particularly during the winter season.
The waterfall is one of the many breathtaking attractions in Daringbadi, often referred to as the “Kashmir of Odisha.”
The women from the SHGs have taken it upon themselves to maintain the waterfall’s surroundings, despite initial neglect. They protest the lack of support for boosting tourism potential in the district. Every day, the women gather at the spot in the morning and work tirelessly to maintain the area until evening.
The women stated that they have taken the initiative to protect their environment, despite receiving no support from the local administration. However, the administration has since engaged the women of eight local SHGs for the maintenance and sanitation of the waterfall.
Their responsibilities include managing the traffic post, parking area, check gate, and overall sanitation of the surroundings.
Their primary concern is the need for a permanent shed, as they currently work under a makeshift tarpaulin shed. Additionally, they emphasize the necessity of toilet facilities and drinking water for both tourists and themselves.
“We work tirelessly to preserve the serenity of this place. However, we lack a permanent shed and basic amenities like toilets and drinking water. Tourists, especially women, complain about the absence of proper facilities. We appeal to the local administration to address these issues,” said an SHG member.
The women are optimistic that resolving these issues will lead to an increase in tourist footfall. Midubanda Waterfall is a top choice among visitors, along with other attractions like Indradhanu, Patabandha, and Kirikuti Lovers’ Point. The picturesque surroundings and crystal-clear water make it a perfect destination, offering a visual feast for tourists
