Bhanjanagar/Soro: One person was killed after being hit by a pickup van in front of his house in Ganjam district of Odisha on Monday morning. The incident took place in Kesharapalli village under Gangpur police limits in Bhanjanagar area.
The deceased has been identified as Seemanchal Swain of Kesharapalli village.
According to reports, the pickup van was carrying a family from Bhanjanagar to Asika and overturned after hitting a roadside tube well. At that time, Seemanchal Swain was collecting water from the tube well. The pickup van overturned and fell on him and he was killed on the spot.
Soon, locals blocked the road alleging that the accident occurred due to reckless driving and demanded compensation for the deceased’s family members. Vehicular movement was disrupted on the Aska-Bhanjanagar Road after the accident.
On being informed, a team from Gangpur police station reached the spot and mediated with the protestors and the road was cleared after about 2 hours.
Meanwhile, Gangpur police have seized the body and are investigating the case.
In another mishap, a pickup van met with an accident while the Kalash procession was going on injuring 10 devotees critically. Locals rescued the injured and admitted them to Basta and Balasore hospitals.
A Kalash procession was being held in the morning to Balaiyapati Jagannath temple in a pickup van to bring the garlands. As the van neared Bahabalpur Chhak the driver lost control on the wheel and met with an accident.
