Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of intense thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning, strong gusty winds, and isolated heavy rainfall with hail across several districts of Odisha over the coming days.
In its Midday Weather Bulletin issued at 2.00 PM today, the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre noted that the Southwest Monsoon has advanced further into parts of the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and is expected to progress into more areas in the next 4-5 days.
Day 1 (Valid till 0830 hrs IST of 31 May 2026): Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are very likely at a few places across Odisha.
Orange Alert (Be Prepared): Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 60-70 kmph are likely at one or two places over Sundergarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj. Heavy rainfall accompanied by hailstorms is also expected in Sundergarh and Keonjhar, while hailstorms alone are forecast for Mayurbhanj.
Yellow Alert (Be Aware): Thunderstorms with winds of 40-50 kmph likely in many coastal and interior districts. Hot and humid conditions are expected at isolated places in coastal districts.
Day 2 (31 May – 1 June): Light to moderate rain or thundershowers likely at a few places, particularly in coastal and southern districts.
Orange Alert: Thunderstorms with gusty winds (50-60 kmph) and heavy rainfall likely over Nayagarh and Ganjam. Strong thunderstorms expected in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj.
Day 3 (1–2 June): Scattered rain or thundershowers.
Orange Alert: Thunderstorms with gusty winds (50-60 kmph) and heavy rain likely over Ganjam; strong thunderstorms forecast for Kandhamal and Gajapati.
Days 4 to 7 (2–6 June): Light to moderate rain or thundershowers expected at one or two places, mainly in coastal and southern districts.
Yellow Alert persists for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds (40-50 kmph) in most districts, along with hot and humid conditions in coastal areas. No major change is expected in the subsequent three days (6–9 June).
Fishermen Advisory: Squally weather with winds reaching 40-50 kmph (gusting to 60 kmph) and rough to very rough seas are likely along and off the North Odisha Coast on 31 May and 1 June. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during this period.
The bulletin recorded notable rainfall in several districts today, with Garadapur (Kendrapara) receiving 7 cm, along with hail in Keonjhar and a squall at Paradip.
