Cuttack: The Orissa High Court on Friday granted conditional anticipatory bail to item dancer Nisha Maharana in connection with a case related to an alleged obscene dance performance during a Jatra programme in Balangir district.
The case pertains to a dance performance held on January 12, which the police termed obscene. Acting suo motu, the police registered a case and arrested two event organisers in the matter. Apprehending arrest, Nisha Maharana had approached the High Court seeking anticipatory bail.
Granting relief, the High Court allowed anticipatory bail on the condition that Nisha Maharana furnish a bail bond of ₹20,000 with one surety.
Confirming the development, her counsel Ghanshyam Muduli said, “The High Court today granted anticipatory bail to Nisha Maharana. The bail has been granted against a surety of ₹20,000. The trial court may impose additional conditions.”
He further stated that the lower court will decide the detailed terms and conditions to be complied with by the dancer.
Earlier reports in mid-January had indicated that Nisha Maharana had moved the court fearing imminent arrest following the police action against the organisers of the Jatra event.
