Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Rural Development & Marketing Society (ORMAS), under the Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Department, has launched ‘Rangotsav-2026’ at the State Institute for Rural Development & Panchayati Raj (SIRD & PR) campus in Bhubaneswar, aiming to promote safe, environment-friendly Holi celebrations while providing a sustainable market for women Self Help Groups (SHGs) to sell herbal ‘abir’ (colours).
The week-long fair will showcase not only natural colours but also a wide range of rural products, including traditional Odia delicacies, fine handicrafts, and handmade home accessories. Visitors can also experience the skills and creativity of women entrepreneurs from rural Odisha.
On the occasion, Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Minister Rabi Narayan Naik welcomed the initiative, saying, “Rangotsav is a perfect blend of safe dyes and women empowerment. By using natural dyes prepared by SHG women, we can protect the environment and support the rural economy. I urge everyone to adopt local products and support rural communities.”
ORMAS Chief Executive Officer, Dr Monica Priyadarshini, said, “Rangotsav reflects the skills and entrepreneurship of rural women. ORMAS is committed to connecting them with modern markets and giving a unique identity to their products. Through high-quality packaging and branding, these items are now being introduced in major urban markets.”
A highlight of the fair is the chemical-free herbal gulal, prepared by SHGs with the support of Rural Industrial Parks (RIPCs) in Ganjam district. Made from natural ingredients such as turmeric, beetroot, and flowers, the colours are completely safe for the skin and the environment. The fair also features traditional Odia food, handicrafts, and handmade household items, allowing rural women to reach urban consumers directly without intermediaries.
The event, which continues until 4 March 2026, at the SIRD & PR campus in Unit-8, Bhubaneswar, is part of a broader effort to merge Odisha’s traditional arts and crafts with modern markets while empowering rural women financially.
ORMAS has urged citizens to support the initiative by purchasing natural Holi colours and traditional products, thereby fostering sustainable rural livelihoods.
