Padma Shri Awardee Tribal Singer Purnamasi Jani Hospitalized; Condition Stable

Bhubaneswar: Padma Shri awardee Purnamasi Jani, a tribal singer and social activist from Kandhamal district, has been admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Kandhamal district, after complaining of illness.

According to reports, she was initially taken to the Khajuripada Hospital before being referred to the District Headquarters Hospital. Jani, who has been suffering from swelling in her legs and hands, along with anaemia, is currently receiving treatment in the medicine department of the hospital. Doctors have reported her condition to be stable.

Notably, Jani has sung thousands of songs promoting social causes in Odia, Kui and Sanskrit for over six decades. She has been conferred with Padma Shri 2021.

Born in 1936 and a resident of Charipada village in Kandhamal, she never went to school and can’t read or write. Yet, she recites beautiful poems in Kui.
