Bhubaneswar: Electronics and Information Technology Minister Mukesh Mahaling on Tuesday clarified that the Paika Rebellion has not been omitted from NCERT textbooks.
He stated that the topic will be included in Part 2 of the Class 8 Social Science textbook, citing an official press release issued by NCERT.
The clarification comes in response to recent media reports alleging that references to regional resistance movements were removed from the newly released textbook, “Exploring Society: India and Beyond.”
According to the NCERT press release, the current textbook is only the first volume.
“The second volume is in final stages of development and is expected to be released in September–October 2025. Topics relating to the regional resistance movements/armed uprisings such as the Paika rebellion/Khurda uprising of Odisha, the Kuka movement/rebellion of the Sikhs in Punjab etc, will be handled in this volume,” the release stated.
Minister Mahaling echoed this clarification on social media platform X, reassuring that the historical significance of the Paika Rebellion remains acknowledged in the upcoming curriculum.
