Panel Bats For Hike In Odisha MLAs’ Pay, Perks

Bhubaneswar: A Parliamentary Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances has called for a revision of the existing salaries and allowances of legislators and former legislators in Odisha.

The committee, which is on a visit to Bhubaneswar, held separate and detailed discussions on Sunday with Odisha Legislative Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Dr Mukesh Mahaling and Assembly Secretary Satyabrata Rout, besides other officials.

The discussions centred on the salaries and various allowances admissible to Members of the Odisha Legislative Assembly, as well as the pension and allowances provided to former legislators.

During the meetings, the Joint Committee presented a comparative statement highlighting the salaries, allowances and other facilities available to Members of Parliament and legislators in various states, vis-à-vis those provided to sitting and former legislators in Odisha.

Following the discussions, the committee observed that the existing salaries and allowances of Odisha legislators and former legislators need to be revised.

The delegation comprised Committee Chairman and MP Birendra Prasad Baishya and MPs Vijay Kumar Dubey, Veena Devi, K. Gopinath, Babu Singh Kushwaha and Richard Vanlalhmangaiha. Parliament Director Vatsala Joshi was also part of the delegation.

The committee’s visit is expected to provide further inputs for reviewing the existing provisions relating to the salaries, allowances and other benefits of legislators and former legislators in Odisha.
