Bhubaneswar: Khandagiri Police on Wednesday arrested Somnath Behera, the owner of the Thar vehicle, involved in a fatal hit and run accident which claimed two lives.
According to reports, the accident occurred on the day of Raksha Bandhan at Patrapada under Khandagiri police limits. An eight-year-old girl died instantly, while two others, including the girl’s mother, sustained injuries in the mishap. Unfortunately, the girl’s mother later succumbed to her injuries.
The police had previously arrested three persons in connection with the case and forwarded them to court. However, the vehicle owner, a resident of Jatni, was reportedly absconding for the past one and half month following the mishap. On a tip-off, police arrested Behera from Puri.
The arrest of the Thar owner came after widespread protests and roadblocks by the victim’s family and locals, who were demanding justice.
Meanwhile, Police Commissioner has confirmed the arrest, and further investigation is underway.
