Bhubaneswar: In a deeply shocking incident, a 15-year-old boy reportedly died by suicide following a dispute with his mother over mobile phone use on the first death anniversary of his father. His mother, devastated by the loss of her only son, later attempted to end her life by consuming poison.
The incident occurred at Hatikhana village under Jagatpur police limits in Cuttack district.
The deceased has been identified as Ayushman Sahu (15), also known as Somu, son of late Subas Chandra Sahu. He was a Class 10 student at Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir in Purbakhachha. Apart from studies, Somu was a talented dancer and had recently won an award in the junior category of a local TV channel’s dance and acting competition titled ‘Tike Dance Tike Acting’.
According to reports, the family was busy performing the rituals for the first death anniversary of Somu’s father on Thursday. Somu had not gone to school for the occasion. Around 9 am, when he was engrossed in watching his mobile phone, his mother scolded him and hid the phone. Upset over this, Somu consumed pesticide kept in the house in a fit of rage. When family members found him unconscious a short while later, he was rushed first to a private hospital in Jagatpur and then to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Devastated by the news of her only son’s death, his mother also consumed poison. Neighbours rushed her to a nearby private hospital, where she is currently undergoing treatment in critical condition.
