Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to renowned freedom fighter Parbati Giri, highlighting her contribution to India’s freedom struggle and her lifelong dedication to social service, during the 129th episode of his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’.
Addressing the nation, the Prime Minister said that as the country prepares to celebrate its 77th Republic Day next month, it is an occasion to remember the sacrifices of freedom fighters and the architects of the Constitution. He noted that while people from every region contributed to the freedom movement, many unsung heroes did not receive due recognition. Parbati Giri of Odisha, he said, was one such courageous leader.
The Prime Minister announced that Parbati Giri’s birth centenary would be observed in January 2026. He recalled that she joined the Quit India Movement at the young age of 16 and later devoted her entire life to social service, particularly for the welfare of tribal communities.
“Her inspiring life will continue to guide generations,” the Prime Minister said, paying his heartfelt tribute to her.
Parbati Giri (January 19, 1926 – August 17, 1995), daughter of Dhananjay Giri, was popularly known as the Mother Teresa of Western Odisha. A prominent woman freedom fighter, she played an active role in the Quit India Movement and was imprisoned for two years for her anti-British activities. After Independence, she continued serving society by establishing orphanages, including one at Paikmal village, and dedicated the rest of her life to the welfare of orphans.
