Kendrapara: Odisha Police have detained two persons from Chhattisgarh in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 17-year-old girl, an incident that occurred just 200 meters from the Superintendent of Police (SP) office in Kendrapara district, officials said on Tuesday.

The survivor, a resident of a village in Chhattisgarh, was attacked on Monday night at Jajanga. The crime came to light on Tuesday after the victim’s mother filed a complaint at the Kendrapara Sadar police station.

According to the complaint, the victim had stepped out of her roadside tent to relieve herself when two inebriated men forcefully took her to an isolated spot. The police stated that the accused, who were armed with a knife, raped the minor and assaulted her when she attempted to resist.

The perpetrators also threatened to kill the victim if she disclosed the incident to anyone, a police officer said.

Following the registration of the complaint, a special team was constituted to investigate the matter. The police swiftly traced and detained the two accused, identified as being 30 and 34 years old, from Chhattisgarh.

A case has been registered against the detained individuals under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, confirmed Kendrapara SP Sidhartha Kataria.

The victim, along with her parents, had been residing in a makeshift tent by the roadside for the past three months, earning a livelihood by selling brooms. They originally hail from a village in Chhattisgarh.
