Baripada: In continuation of the special drive launched by Mayurbhanj police to de-weaponize and weed out poachers from the Similipal Tiger reserve area, during an intelligence-based search Khunta police on Friday seized eight country made single barrel muzzle loading guns and one country-made pistol.
“The special drive to de-weaponize and prevent poaching in Similipal Tiger Reserve is continuing. As part of the exercise during searches by Khunta police in two places yesterday we have seized eight single barrel muzzle loading country-made guns and one pistol. In total we have seized nine country-made weapons,” informed Mayurbhanj SP Battula Gangadhar addressing a presser here today.
The SP said that police had given a call to poachers to surrender their weapons as part of the special drive.
These seizures have been made in response to the call given by the police asking poachers to surrender their weapons, he added.
Gangadhar said that including the seizures made yesterday, the total number of weapon seizures as of now stands at 32.
“We have intelligence-based information and are hopeful of seizure of another 20-30 weapons by tomorrow and the day after tomorrow,” Gangadhar informed.
