Bhubaneswar: The Balasore police on Monday recovered a vast quantity of explosives from derelict stone quarries near Khanjamahal under Mahumuhan panchayat in Soro block in Odisha’s Balasore district.
The seized explosives were procured for use in blasting in the quarries.
According to reports, a team from Soro police station undertook a raid at these abandoned stone quarries and found 1,500 kg of gelatin sticks from an isolated place near Bagudi. In addition, the police team also recovered 6,000 kg of explosives and gelatin sticks from another abandoned stone quarry near Mahumuhan.
A case has been registered in this connection at the Soro police station and the police have investigated the matter.
The raid was conducted in the wake of allegations of stone smuggling from abandoned and illegal quarries in the Khanjamahal locality. It is suspected that miscreants and stone smugglers procured the explosives illegally to extract stones from illegal stone quarries in the region after blasting the hills.
