Bhubaneswar: A person was killed and eight others sustained critical injuries in an alleged clash between Biju Janata Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers at Krushna Saranpur village under Khallikote police limits in Ganjam on Wednesday.
According to sources, supporters of both the ruling BJD party and the saffron party engaged in a deadly clash over putting up of election posters. Their fight turned so bitter that it claimed the life of a person.
The deceased has been identified as Dilip Pahan.
The election violence also left eight others injured. All of them were rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for treatment. One of the critically injured has been referred to Bhubaneswar as his condition deteriorated.
Concerned over the incident ahead of the second phase of elections in the state, Odisha Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Nikuja Bihari Dhal has, meanwhile, directed the Ganjam District Collector and Superintendent of Police (SP) to take action to contain pre-poll violence incidents in the district.
He has also made it clear that any such poll-related violence will not be tolerated.
