Bhubaneswar: President Droupadi Murmu on Monday met the 20-year-old student of Fakir Mohan (FM) Autonomous College in Balasore, who is undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar after attempting self-immolation, allegedly due to harassment by a faculty member.
After attending the convocation ceremony at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, the President visited the student at a special medical unit in the hospital. She enquired about her condition and conveyed her wishes for a speedy recovery. The student had reportedly set herself on fire in front of the college principal’s chamber on July 12, accusing the Head of the Education Department Samira Kumar Sahu of continuous harassment.
“The President met the family members of the victim and assured them that the best possible treatment is being provided. We are using advanced medical technology and her condition was explained in detail to the President,” said AIIMS Bhubaneswar Executive Director and CEO Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, while speaking to the media.
President Murmu also interacted with the team of doctors overseeing the case and expressed concern over the student’s trauma. She later met the student’s parents and offered her support.
Odisha Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan accompanied the President during the visit.
The student had reportedly set herself on fire in front of the principal’s chamber, citing ongoing mental harassment by a faculty member.
An investigation into the allegations is underway.
