Old Apartment Collapses - Cuttack

Cuttack: A probe panel has been constituted to submit a report within 24 hours following the collapse of the balcony of an old residential apartment near Mani Sahu Chhak in Cuttack on Saturday, which claimed the lives of three family members, including a five-year-old child.

Cuttack Collector Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde stated that the committee—comprising the Additional Commissioner of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC), officials from the Cuttack Development Authority (CDA) Planning Authority, the City Engineer, and the R&B Superintendent Engineer—will examine regulatory permissions, planning lapses, and safety aspects.

“Action will be taken based on the report,” said Collector Shinde while briefing the media.

He added that if the collapse is found to be a pure accident, no complaint will be filed. However, in cases of negligence or violation of regulations, strict action will follow.

The Collector also mentioned that unsafe buildings have already been identified and plans for their evacuation are underway, following due process as per Supreme Court guidelines. After the conclusion of Baliyatra, a meeting with all relevant departments will be held to provide clear directions.

The Chief Minister’s Office has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased and has directed officials to ensure proper treatment for the injured and initiate a thorough investigation.
