Bhubaneswar: A swift and coordinated response by the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) 112 and the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate Police helped save the life of a critically injured youth who was found near railway tracks on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar after allegedly being pushed from a moving train.
The injured man, identified as Rakesh Behera of Dhenkanal district, managed to call the 112 emergency helpline at 9.30 PM on Thursday despite sustaining serious injuries. During the distress call, he informed the control room that he had fallen from a moving train but was unable to pinpoint his exact location.
Acting immediately on the alert, the police dispatched PCR-7 to the suspected stretch between Vani Vihar and Mancheswar railway stations. However, the rescue operation proved challenging as it was dark and raining, making it difficult to locate the victim.
Undeterred, the police team continued searching along nearly two kilometres of the railway track before finally tracing Rakesh in an injured condition near the Kalikhama bridge.
The rescuers shifted him to Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar for emergency treatment. Considering the severity of his injuries, doctors later referred him to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for advanced medical care.
Police officials said the timely response to the emergency call and the persistence shown by the PCR personnel during the difficult search operation played a decisive role in saving the youth’s life.
Recognising their exemplary service, Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner S. Dev Datta Singh met the PCR-7 team, including the constable, home guard and driver, and commended them for their prompt response, dedication and professionalism during the rescue operation.
The exact circumstances under which the youth allegedly fell from the moving train are yet to be established. Police said an investigation is underway to ascertain the sequence of events.
