In a devastating incident, one child succumbed to death and more than 30 devotees suffered burn injuries after being exposed to firecracker flares during the Chapa Khela ritual of Lord Jagannath’s holy Chandan Yatra on Wednesday evening at Devi Ghat, near Narendra Pushkarini, Puri.
The injured patients were immediately admitted to the burn unit of District Headquarters Hospital (DHH), Puri and subsequently shifted to other hospitals after tension erupted over the lack of doctors.
Nearly 27 injured devotees were referred to hospitals in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, whereas other patients were shifted to a private hospital in Puri.
The incident took place when a crowd of devotees gathered to witness the divine ‘Chapa Khela’ ritual at Narendra Pushkarini.
