Bhubaneswar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced the postponement of the election process for the state party president and national council members in light of the recent stampede in Puri during Rath Yatra festivities, which claimed three lives.
The party’s decision comes as a mark of respect for the victims and their families.
Balasore MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi announced that the elections for the state BJP president and national council members, scheduled for July 1, have been postponed due to the recent stampede in Puri.
Sarangi, who has been appointed as the state returning officer for the party’s organisational poll, confirmed the decision to put the elections on hold out of respect for the victims and their families. The party will decide on a new date for the elections after consulting with central leaders.
According to reports, the election processes were scheduled to begin on June 29 and would have lasted for three days, with MP Sanjay Jaiswal appointed as the observer for the process.
It is learnt that the party will reassess the situation and decide on a new timeline for the elections after consulting with central leaders.
