Burla: Ragging allegations have surfaced at the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) again. This time, a second-year student of the institute has alleged that he was a victim of verbal abuse and physical harassment by his seniors.
According to reports, third year students of VIMSAR verbally abused the second-year student and hit him on February 7. The matter came to the fore after the student narrated his plight to his mother. Subsequently, the student’s mother reported the matter to Professor Pradeep Kumar Mohanty, Dean of VIMSAR, over the telephone. Acting on the complaint, Prof Mohanty constituted a committee to look into the allegations and recommend measures if the allegations are true.
Meanwhile, Prof Mohanty told the media that the second-year student’s mother called him and alleged that her son was manhandled and abused using filthy language by a few students of the third year. A committee has been formed to probe the matter and necessary action will be taken after the findings of the committee.
However, neither the student nor his family members have lodged a formal written complaint.
Meanwhile, ragging allegations have surfaced at the VIMSAR time and again. Around 18 MBBS students were subjected to ragging in March 2021 and it was repeated in September 2019. Despite announcing strict anti-ragging measures and hefty fines, the institute has not been able to eradicate this menace.
