Nabarangapur: A man arrested in connection with a rape case was found dead under mysterious circumstances inside Dabugaon police station in Nabarangapur district on Wednesday. Police suspect it to be a case of suicide.

According to reports, the deceased has been identified as Purna Kalar from Medena panchayat area under Dabugaon police station limits. He was reportedly arrested two days back in connection with a rape case. He underwent examination yesterday. He was scheduled to be produced in court today. However, the accused allegedly hanged himself using his own bedsheet inside the police station.

The incident has caused widespread concern and outrage in the local area. Despite round-the-clock presence of police personnel inside the station, the fact that an accused could commit suicide has triggered serious doubts and suspicion.

The truth is expected to come out only after an investigation.

Meanwhile, tension ran high at the police station with family members and relatives of the deceased staging a protest, and blocking the road connecting to Nabarangapur.

They alleged that the police brutally assaulted their son inside the lock-up and later staged it as a suicide. The agitated family members sat in front of the police station demanding to see the body of the deceased and raised slogans against the police.

The body of the deceased has been sent to the Nabarangapur District Headquarters Hospital for post-mortem. Authorities fear that tension may rise further once the body is handed over to the family.

To prevent any untoward incident, the police administration has deployed two platoons of police force along with nine police officers at Dabugaon Police Station.
