Bhubaneswar: A rape accused who escaped from police custody in Bhubaneswar has been arrested from Bengaluru by the Commissionerate Police, bringing an end to a brief manhunt that began after his escape from a police canteen.
The accused, identified as Rudra Prasad Sutar, was apprehended in the Karnataka capital by a special police team and produced before a local court there. He was subsequently brought to Bhubaneswar by train on Friday morning and is scheduled to be produced before a local court.
Sutar had been arrested by the Mahila Police from Bhadrak a few days ago in connection with an alleged rape case registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by a woman.
According to police, the accused managed to flee while having breakfast at a canteen during police custody. Following the incident, a separate case was registered at Capital Police Station, and an intensive search operation was launched to trace him.
Commissionerate Police said the accused was tracked down and arrested in Bengaluru within a day of his escape. After completing the necessary legal formalities before a local court in Karnataka, the police team brought him back to Bhubaneswar for further proceedings.
Police officials said the accused will be produced before the court later in the day as the investigation into the rape case and the custody escape continues.
