Bhubaneswar: Ahead of the annual Rath Yatra in Puri, the Odisha Fire & Emergency Services Department has prepared a comprehensive safety plan, with around 300 fire personnel and 500 trained lifeguards set to be deployed to ensure the safety of devotees and tourists during the mega religious festival.

DG, Fire & Emergency Services (F&ES), Civil Defence, Home Guards and Director, Civil Defence, Dr. Sudhanshu Sarangi, on Monday said the department’s preparedness for Rath Yatra is in the final stage and additional measures have been planned this year to tackle fire emergencies, accidents, weather-related challenges and beach safety issues.

“Our preparedness for Rath Yatra is in the final stage. This year, we are making more arrangements to ensure that devotees and tourists remain safe. Our responsibilities have been divided into seven parts, with fire safety being the primary focus,” Sarangi told reporters.

He urged people to remain cautious and alert during the festival and advised them to immediately dial the emergency helpline number 112 in case of any emergency.

As part of the safety arrangements, around 300 fire service personnel will be deployed at strategic locations across Puri. Quick Response Teams (QRTs) will be stationed at important points to ensure immediate intervention during any emergency situation.

The department has also prepared plans to deal with extreme weather conditions during the festival. Considering the prevailing heat conditions, arrangements have been made for water sprinkling in different areas. Sarangi said adequate measures have also been taken to tackle possible waterlogging in case of heavy rainfall during the Rath Yatra.

“We have kept pumps ready to drain out water if required. During the chariot-pulling ceremony, there should be no disruption due to waterlogging. We have also discussed the arrangements with the Puri Municipal Corporation,” he said.

Highlighting the importance of tourist safety, Sarangi said special focus has been given to beach security during the festival period. Around 500 lifeguard personnel will be deployed at Puri beaches, and they have been trained to handle emergency situations.

“Beach safety is another important aspect. Around 500 lifeguards will be deployed at Puri beaches, and they have received necessary training. We hope they will perform their duties effectively,” Sarangi added.

The Fire & Emergency Services Department has also made arrangements to handle possible accidents during the festival. Fire officers and emergency teams will remain present at key locations to provide quick assistance whenever required.

With lakhs of devotees expected to gather in Puri for the Rath Yatra, authorities have intensified preparations to ensure a smooth and safe conduct of the annual festival.
