Bhubaneswar: Police identified the parents of the miracle baby girl ‘Bijayini’ who was rescued from an abandoned borewell in Rengali 22 days ago.
The mother of the infant is a mentally ill woman, Sambalpur SP Mukesh Bhamu said at a presser.
“She was under postpartum depression. We sent her to the psychiatric ward of SCB Medical College. She was unable to speak anything about the incident initially. She will be discharged within a day or two. Then, we can expedite the investigation. She has admitted that the infant is her own daughter,” the SP said.
“Initially, we brought her to the police station, but she didn’t speak anything due to her ill mental health, he added.
The SP further informed that the girl is her second child. Police will conduct her DNA test to gather evidence, he said.
The parents of the infant belong to Rengali area in Sambalpur. They are daily labourers, the SP said.
The infant who is currently under treatment at VIMSAR was named ‘Bijayini’ in her 21st day ritual observed by the hospital authorities on Monday. The event was marked by cake cutting and sweets distribution on the hospital premises.
The baby who was dumped by her mother into the borewell in Rengali was rescued alive by the Fire brigade, ODRAF and NDRF after seven-hour long operation.
Initially, she had internal injuries, but she recovered with proper medical care at the SNCU of the hospital. Doctors said, Bijayini is now doing well and will recover completely.
