Bhubaneswar: Sambalpuri playwright, poet, and lyricist Binod Kumar Pasayat passed away today at the age of 89.
Pasayat, a recipient of Padma Shri Award, was suffering from age-related ailments. He breathed his last at his residence near Sen Park in Sambalpur on Wednesday morning.
Born on December 3, 1935 at Kusmel village in Balangir district, Pasayat was known for his immense contributions to Sambalpuri literature and folk culture. He was a barber by profession, but he dedicated his life to promoting Sambalpuri drama, songs, and poetry.
His writings were known for their simplicity and deep connection to local culture, earning him wide recognition across western Odisha. His iconic play ‘Mui Nai Mare’ (I Will Never Die) and numerous Sambalpuri folk songs continue to inspire generations.
Throughout his illustrious career, Pasayat received several prestigious awards, including the Padma Shri in 2024, Sarala Puraskar (2008), Odisha Sahitya Akademi Puraskar (2010), and Sarada Prasanna Samman by Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi (2019).
Pasayat’s legacy will be remembered for his tireless efforts to promote Sambalpuri culture and his commitment to his roots.
His passing has left a void in the literary and cultural landscape of Odisha.
