Bhubaneswar: A Special Vigilance Court in Dhenkanal today convicted and sentenced retired Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Abhimanyu Sahoo to two years of simple imprisonment for demanding and accepting a bribe from a student in exchange for releasing a seized motorcycle.
Sahoo, a former ASI of Rasol Police Station in Dhenkanal district, was charge-sheeted by Odisha Vigilance under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(d), 7, and 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, along with Section 120-B of the IPC. The case pertained to his demand and acceptance of illegal gratification from a student to facilitate the release of the latter’s motorcycle that had been seized during investigation.
Apart from the two-year jail term, the court also imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on the retired police officer.
Following the conviction, Odisha Vigilance has stated that it will move the competent authority to stop Sahoo’s pension, as per rules applicable to convicted government servants.
