Bhubaneswar: A Special Vigilance Court in Baripada on Saturday convicted a retired Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Police in a bribery case and sentenced him to three years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for demanding and accepting illegal gratification.
The convict, Satyaban Giri, former ASI of Police posted at Jharadihi Police Out-post under Tiringi Police Station in Mayurbhanj district, was found guilty under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018.
Pronouncing the judgment on January 31, 2026, the Special Judge, Vigilance, Baripada, held Giri guilty of demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹9,000 from a liquor vendor in exchange for allowing the vendor’s business to operate without police interference. Along with the prison term, the court also imposed a fine.
The case was registered by Odisha Vigilance at Balasore Vigilance Police Station on January 27, 2021, following a trap operation that established the charge of bribery against the then serving police officer. Following the conviction, Odisha Vigilance announced that it will move the competent authority for stoppage of pension of the retired officer in accordance with applicable service and pension rules.
The conviction is part of Odisha Vigilance’s continued drive against corruption in public services, aimed at ensuring accountability and integrity within the police and administrative machinery.
