Diarrhea Outbreak

Rayagada: A 10-year-old girl died, and 30 other students were hospitalised after falling ill with diarrhea at Bariguda Nalini Vidya Mandir hostel in Chatikona Panchayat of Bissam Cuttack block, on Saturday, officials said.

The deceased, Lagna Urlaka, a fourth-grade student from Konadi village under Bhatpur Panchayat, reportedly complained of diarrhea and vomiting late Friday night. She was taken to a nearby medical centre, where doctors administered saline and prescribed medication. After treatment, Lagna returned to school, but her parents later took her home. She died at her residence, authorities confirmed.

Meanwhile, 30 other students showing similar symptoms were admitted to Bissam Cuttack Community Health Center, and two were later referred to Rayagada District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) for further care.

Nalini Vidya Mandir headmistress Urmila Satpathy said, “Lagna had mild symptoms and was treated immediately. Doctors found no serious issues, but her parents insisted on taking her home.”

Tahasildar K. Venketeswar Reddy confirmed that the remaining students are stable and under observation.

“All other affected students are now stable. The district administration is closely monitoring the situation to prevent any further cases. The exact cause of the outbreak is yet to be determined,” he said.

The exact cause of the outbreak is yet to be ascertained.
