Baragada: A Special Vigilance Court in Baragada on Thursday sentenced a retired senior clerk of the Sub-Treasury Office at Bhatli to four years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of Rs. 20,000 after convicting him in a bribery case registered by Odisha Vigilance.
The convict, Rajendra Narayan Meher, former Senior Clerk of the Sub-Treasury Office, Bhatli in Baragarh district, was found guilty by the Special Judge, Vigilance, Baragada, under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. Following the conviction, he was sent to jail to serve his sentence.
According to Odisha Vigilance, Meher had been charge-sheeted for demanding and accepting a bribe from a Cluster Resource Centre Coordinator (CRCC) under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) to process and pass the reimbursement bill for the medical treatment of the complainant’s son.
The case was registered under Sections 13(2) read with 13(1)(d) and 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
Odisha Vigilance said it will now move the competent authority to initiate proceedings for the stoppage of pension benefits of Meher, who has since retired from service, in view of his conviction.
