Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is preparing a fresh Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed Metro Rail project in the state, with a renewed focus on ensuring its viability, connectivity, and public benefit, Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra announced on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters, Mahapatra said the new DPR is being drafted under the supervision of the department’s Principal Secretary and the state’s Chief Secretary. A dedicated team has already been constituted for this purpose, and the report is expected to be completed “very soon”.
“Our government is seriously considering the Metro project and is committed to ensuring its successful implementation. With support and cooperation from the Centre, the Metro will be made people-centric and truly beneficial for the public,” the Minister said.
He also questioned the practicality of the earlier Metro plan proposed by the previous government, which envisaged a route from Bhubaneswar Airport to Trisulia. “What benefit would people get upon alighting at Trisulia? They would go to the bus stand or SCB Medical College & Hospital. What will they do after getting off at Trisulia?” he asked, indicating the need for better connectivity.
To address this concern, Mahapatra revealed that the new DPR will include an extension of the Metro line to Cuttack. “We are planning a system where both road and Metro infrastructure can be developed together. The extended route will make the Metro more useful for daily commuters and improve intercity connectivity,” he added.
An expert committee has been entrusted by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to evaluate the viability of the revised DPR. “The committee will examine all aspects of the project and submit its report at the earliest,” Mahapatra informed.
The new approach marks a shift from previous plans and reflects the state government’s intent to make the Metro project more aligned with public needs and regional development goals.
