Jeypore/Umerkote: Road blockages at Jeypore and State Highway No 39 following the death of two persons in two separate mishaps have disrupted vehicular movement in Koraput and Nabarangpur districts.
The death of an auto-rickshaw driver triggered tension at Jeypore in Koraput district after fellow auto-rickshaw drivers staged a road blockage demanding compensation for the deceased’s family.
According to sources, members of the Jeypore Auto-rickshaw Association held up traffic following the death of Suryanarayan Rath. He was the only earning person in his family. The accident took place at Podagada in Koraput district yesterday and it left one dead and 12 others injured.
Following the death of Rath, neither the district administration nor the bus owner provided compensation to the deceased’s family. Irate over it, auto-rickshaw drivers’ outfit held up traffic and staged a protest by keeping the body of Rath in front of the Jeypore police station seeking justice for the deceased’s family.
In a separate incident, a woman’s death in a road mishap sparked tension at Nabarangpur on Thursday.
According to sources, the deceased has been identified as Gouri Majhi of Sanabharandi village under Umerkote police limits. Gouri met with the accident when she was crossing the road. She died on the spot after being hit by a pick-up van.
Irate locals held up State Highway No. 39 seeking compensation for the kin of the deceased. Vehicular movement has been disrupted between Umerkote and Nabarangpur due to the road blockage.
Police, meanwhile, reached the spot to pacify the agitating locals. The driver and helper of the pick-up van were arrested in this connection.
