Malkangiri: Vehicular communication between Malkangiri and Andhra Pradesh has been disconnected after several bridges on NH 326 were submerged due to flashflood caused by the incessant rain due to low pressure over the Bay of Bengal.
Three low-lying bridges on the Highway were submerged. Water is flowing four feet high on MV 96 bridge. A similar situation was also sighted at MV 90 bridge near Kangurukunda in the district where flood water is flowing three feet above the bridge. The traffic on the route was disrupted as hundreds of vehicles were seen stranded on both sides of the road.
Police personnel from MV 79 police station and Kalimela police station have patrolled the spots and made commuters aware of the situation.
Some motorists were seen riding bikes on the submerged road in the absence of police on MV 90 bridge. The district administration also has kept a close eye on the situation.
Submergence of roads has also been reported from Nabarangpur due to low-pressure-induced heavy rain.
The Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) directed the two Collectors to prohibit the movement of vehicles on submerged roads.
The local police have been asked to remain on the spot to ensure prohibition of public movement.
The SRC also directed the Collectors to evacuate people from low-lying villages. The situation may be closely monitored. Other District Collectors are also instructed to take similar kinds of action depending upon the situation, SRC said.
