Sundargarh: A woman was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Karamdihi Gitpada under Sadar Forest Range in Sundargarh district, on Tuesday.

The deceased, identified as Meri Tete, had gone to collect kendu leaves in the forest along with two other women when the mishap took place.

According to reports, the elephant, which was hiding in the forest, suddenly appeared and attacked the group. While the other two women managed to escape, Meri failed to escape and was trampled to death by the rogue elephant.

Upon being informed, Forest officials and police reached the spot and retrieved the woman’s body.

The elephant is suspected to be still roaming in the forest and is believed to have ventured into the village from Ujjwalpur last night. Forest officials hope the elephant will be shooed away by tonight.
