Bhubaneswar: The Russian government paid tribute to the legendary leader Biju Patnaik’s contributions during World War II. A special ceremony was held at the Russian Embassy in New Delhi on May 9, where a memorial plaque was unveiled in his honour.
According to sources, Opposition leader and Biju Janata Dal leader Naveen Patnaik attended the ceremony and thanked the Russian government for recognising his father’s legacy. The event marked the 80th anniversary of Russia’s victory over Nazism in World War II.
During the war, Biju Patnaik played a key role in supporting the Soviet Red Army, particularly in the Stalingrad campaign, where he is remembered for flying daring missions to supply arms and aid.
In recognition of his valour, the Russian Embassy unveiled a commemorative plaque to Biju Patnaik on its premises. The Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, personally invited Naveen Patnaik to attend the ceremony.
The ceremony was attended by dignitaries and marked a significant moment in strengthening India-Russia relations. Naveen Patnaik’s presence highlighted the importance of his father’s contributions and the enduring bond between the two nations.
Expressing gratitude for being invited to the memorial plaque inauguration ceremony at the Russian Embassy in New Delhi, Patnaik wrote: “Honoured to attend the memorial plaque inauguration ceremony at the Russian Embassy in New Delhi to commemorate the contribution of legendary #BijuPatnaik in Stalingrad Operation during WWII. The Battle of Stalingrad led to success for Russia in the war against Nazi Germany which saved the world from untold horror.
