Bhubaneswar: A poster restricting journalists’ entry into the block office of Sanakhemundi in Ganjam district was found on the wall of the block headquarters.
The notice, reportedly signed by the Block Development Officer (BDO), sparked controversy, with BDO Jitendra Mishra feigning ignorance. He claimed that miscreants might have posted it. However, he later removed the poster. The BDO stated that everyone has the right to access the block office.
Mishra emphasized, “We have high regard for journalists. We have not restricted their entry into the office. Whatever happened was without my knowledge.”
Local journalists demanded an investigation into whether the poster was posted with the BDO’s permission or by someone else.
The incident triggered dissatisfaction among media personalities in Ganjam district. The Sankhemundi Press Club strongly condemned the restriction and demanded action against those responsible.
The press club submitted a memorandum to the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police, seeking an investigation into the matter. If no action is taken, the press club plans to stage a peaceful hunger strike.
Local journalists alleged that massive corruption in the block headquarters led to the restriction on their entry. The incident has raised concerns about the freedom of the press and the need for transparency in government offices.
