Shop Owners Shut Down Bhubaneswar Market Building For Indefinite Period

Bhubaneswar: The Central Market Traders’ Association has shut down the Unit-II Market Building in Bhubaneswar indefinitely to press for its demand to evict makeshift stalls from the area. About 165 traders will close their shops in the complex from Monday.

According to the association president Pradyumna Kumar Jena, they took the decision as the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) did not evict the makeshift shops in the area. Jena said that the shopkeepers will stage a dharna in front of the residences of Bhubaneswar Mayor Sulochana Das and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Vijay Amruta Kulange over the issue.

He alleged that some people have encroached upon the Market Building by opening makeshift vending stalls at the shopping complex. As a result, traders having permanent shops at Market Building are facing problems due to hundreds of makeshift stalls at the shopping complex. In addition, the makeshift stalls are also responsible for the congestion at the Market Building, he alleged.

This conflict between the permanent and makeshift shop owners at the Market building is a recurring issue and has led to several temporary closures of the shopping complex.
