Bhubaneswar: Six persons were detained by police in connection with the attack on Dharmasala MLA Himansu Sekhar Sahu.
Police carried out searches at various locations since last night and detained six persons allegedly involved in the attack. They are being questioned.
The Superintendent of Police formed three special teams which swung into action hours after the attack on the Independent legislator.
Tension still prevailed in Jajpur Biraja market area following face-off between the supports of BJP and BJD.
The MLA alleged that a group of miscreants who are the supporters of BJD leader Pranab Prakash Das attacked him with rods and sticks, vandalising his car. He also alleged that they snatched the gold chain from his neck and attacked his PSO.
The attack took place near near Budha river bridge when the MLA was on his way to DDM office for an official meeting.
Jajpur SP Yashpratap Shrimal said appropriate action will be taken against persons indulging in violence and attacking the MLA.
“I was going to Jajpur Town to attend an urgent official meeting at the DM office this evening. When I reached near Budha river bridge, my vehicle got stranded on the road due to a road blockade by locals. As I was waiting some unidentified miscreants armed with lethal weapons rushed to my vehicle and vandalised it,” the MLA said.
“They also attacked me and my personal security officer and snatched my gold chain from my neck… ,” said the MLA.
When news spread, hundreds of supporters of the legislator rushed to the scene and staged a road blockade. A tense standoff ensued between Sahoo’s supporters and the attackers, prompting the local police and even Jajpur SP to rush to the spot to rescue the MLA.
Later, supporters of both parties staged separate dharna in front of the Jajpr Town Police station. As tension ran high, additional police forces have been deployed at the police station and nearby localities.
