Bhubaneswar: The state government revealed in the assembly that several villages in six coastal districts have been affected by sea tide, with 26 villages in Kendrapara, 14 in Ganjam, and 6 in Puri submerged due to sea erosion between 1990 and 2018.
Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia informed the House that the government has rehabilitated and resettled residents of Satabhaya, Kahnupur, Barahipur in Rajnagar, and Magarkanda and Rabindrapali in Bagpatia. Minister Khuntia made these remarks in response to a question by BJD MLA Ranendra Pratap Swain.
The minister stated that cultivated land in Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, and Balasore has been affected, with 140.73 hectares of cultivable land degraded due to sea erosion.
To mitigate the issue, the government has undertaken efforts to create mangrove forests, aiming to prevent sea tide and protect the coastline.
