Jayapur (Koraput): A third-year Commerce student of Vikram Dev University was critically injured after a huge tree fell on him in front of the administrative building on Saturday.
The injured has been identified as Manab Jain. He was standing under the tree after appearing for his second-semester undergraduate exams in the afternoon when a moderate wind uprooted the giant tree.
Four students were standing under the tree. Three managed to run away and sustained minor injuries, but a branch fell directly on Manab Jain, causing severe head injuries. He was first admitted to District Headquarters Hospital, Jayapur in critical condition, but later shifted to Visakhapatnam as his condition deteriorated.
Several bikes parked under the tree were also damaged and electric wires were uprooted. Students and university staff immediately launched rescue operations. Town police and fire brigade rushed to the spot, cut the fallen tree and cleared the area.
University Registrar Mahesh Chandra Nayak reached the spot immediately and made arrangements to send the injured student to hospital in his vehicle.
