Subarnarekha Crosses Danger Mark Again, Second Flood Fear In Baleshwar

Bhubaneswar: The Subarnarekha River has once again crossed the danger mark, raising fears of a second major flood in the Baleshwar district.

According to reports, the water level stood at 10.40 metres at 9 AM at Rajghat, slightly above the danger level of 10.36 metres.

Meanwhile, floodwaters have already entered low-lying areas of Baliapal and Bhograi blocks. The district administration has expressed concern that nearly 10 panchayats in Baliapal and Bhograi blocks could face flooding if the water level continues to rise. The sharp increase in the river’s flow has been linked to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas, which has significantly pushed up the water volume downstream.

Sources said the Galudih Barrage released about 6,500 cusecs of water at around 3 am, which further pushed up the river level downstream.

Meanwhile, the Central Water Commission reported a severe flood situation at Jamsholaghat in Mayurbhanj district. At 9 am, the river was flowing at 52.18 metres — 3.02 metres above its danger level of 49.16 metres — and the trend remained rising.

The district administration is keeping a close watch on the situation and has advised residents of vulnerable low-lying areas to remain alert.
