Bhubaneswar: The Kharvela Nagar police have arrested one person in connection with the death case of Subhashree Mohapatra of Shastri Nagar area of the city, who was found dead in her house on Tuesday night under mysterious circumstances.

“Chittaranjan Jena has been named accused in this case and has been arrested under section 306 IPC. He has been arrested for abetment to suicide. We are forwarding him to court,” informed Bhubaneswar DCP Prateek Singh briefing reporters here today.
The DCP stated that the deceased Subhashree Mohapatra was married in 2014 and was staying with her husband here since then.
“While she had gone to her parent’s home in 2019 she came in contact with a person Chittaranjan Jena. He used to stay near their house. After coming in contact they became close and their relationship flourished. They were very possessive about their relationship. Her husband had also doubted their relationship and had cautioned her. Their relationship continued despite her husband’s caution. They used to go out and stay in lodges. He used to visit Subhashree’s house,” the DCP said based on the confession of Chittaranjan who was grilled by the police after he was detained at the Kharvela Nagar police station after examination of the call detail record (CDR) of deceased Subhashree’s mobile phone.
Subhashree before her death on Tuesday night had made seven calls to the concerned youth from her mobile phone between 6.30 PM to 6.49 PM. She had spoken to the concerned youth for 27 seconds.
On August 28 when the deceased’s husband had left home to visit his native village, the deceased in the afternoon of August 29 had accompanied by a man to Capital Hospital to meet somebody which Chittaranjan did not like, the DCP said.
According to the DCP, Chittaranjan had an altercation with the deceased over the matter. He visited the deceased’s place and they had heated arguments over the matter and he assaulted the deceased. After this, he left for his workplace. He used to work as a driver in Satyanagar area, he added.
“Following these incidents, the Subhashree out of frustration and depression on the evening of August 30 called Chittaranjan over the phone and informed him of going to the extreme step. Immediately, on hearing this Chittaranjan called the deceased’s son’s tutor who stayed nearby to visit Subhashree’s house to check and verify. The tutor on reaching the place found the door locked from inside but could see that Subhashree was in hanging condition. He immediately informed Chittaranjan over the phone following which the latter rushed to the place entered the house, brought Subhashree down and lay her on the bed. On finding that she is no more, he took away the ligature (odhani) and threw it on the way before fleeing to his native village,” Singh explained.
He said that these were the confessions and outcome of the investigation made by the police.
This has been also corroborated by the tutor. The tutor had also informed the deceased’s house owner about this, he added.
“The post-mortem report of the deceased has confirmed signs and symptoms of assault and her sole cause of death was suicidal hanging which matches with the story. The odhani used for hanging has been recovered. The phone of the accused has been seized,” the DCP concluded.
