Bhubaneswar: Sulochana Das took oath as the Mayor of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Saturday. She was administered the oath by Director of Municipal Administration, Sangramjit Nayak.
Addressing mediapersons, Sulochana said, “On the auspicious occasion of Ashokastami, I pray near Lord Lingaraj to take forward the development chariot of Bhubaneswar like his Rukuna Rath and bless the denizens with a life full of happiness.”
She also thanked all the residents of Bhubaneswar for having put their trust in her and the party. She extended her wishes to all the newly-elected Corporators of BMC and said, with the blessings of Lord Lingaraj, they will serve the people together.
The BJD leader had won in the recent polls defeating her nearest rival Suniti Mund of the BJP by a margin of 61,143 votes.
Sulochana, who began her career as a journalist, started her political journey with the Congress and later joined the Biju Janata Dal.
She was made the state commissioner for persons with disabilities by the Odisha government in 2019 before being declared as BJD’s nominee for the BMC Mayor post by party president Naveen Patnaik.
