Bhubaneswar: Five months after software engineer Sweta Utkal Kumari was found hanging in an apartment in the capital city, the Commissionerate Police arrested her boyfriend Soymyajit Mahapatra in the early hours of Thursday in connection with her death.
The arrest was made from Soumyajit’s residence at Bansidhar Nagar in Odisha’s Sambalpur district at around 4:30 am today. A team from the Chandrasekharpur police station in the capital city reached Bareipalli police station at 4.00 am and proceeded to Soumyajit’s house along with a team of Bareipalli police station.
After completing the formalities at the Bareipalli police station, the Chandrasekharpur police will bring Soumyajit to Bhubaneswar today.
According to sources, the arrest was made after the Supreme Court and Orissa High Court rejected Soumyajit’s anticipatory bail petitions.
It is worth mentioning here that Sweta hailed from Odisha’s Bhadrak district and worked with an IT firm in Bhubaneswar. She was residing at the Garden apartment in the Infocity area of Bhubaneswar. When her family members failed to contact her over the telephone despite repeated attempts on August 19, 2022, they sought the help of Chandrasekharpur police.
Soon, a team from Chandrasekharpur police station visited her apartment and found Sweta’s room locked from the inside. Police broke open the door to gain entry and found Sweta hanging from the ceiling fan in her room.
Initially, the police passed off Sweat’s death as a suicide case but her family members filed a complaint alleging that Soumyajit was blackmailing her.
