Bhubaneswar: In a heart-warming display of creativity and determination, Divyang children from the Asha Vocational Centre in Baramunda have crafted stunning wax-filled clay lamps and fragrant candles to celebrate Diwali.
Thirty children, all part of the Parents Association of Mentally Retarded Children (PAMRC), have been working tirelessly under the guidance of their instructors to create these beautiful pieces.
Despite their unique abilities, these children have proven that with the right support and cooperation, they can become self-reliant and showcase their talents. The lamps and candles made by the children are not only aesthetically pleasing but also burn for hours, filling the air with sweet fragrances.
The Asha Vocational Center, run by PAMRC, provides a platform for intellectually disabled children to hone their skills and gain confidence. For the past four years, the center has been training these children in various vocations, including making phenyl, turmeric, umbrellas, rakshi, paper bags, incense sticks, lamps, and candles.
The parents of the children are deeply involved in the center’s activities, providing raw materials and support. They have also been working with the Disabled Empowerment Department (SSAPD) to sell the products made by the children. However, the parents have expressed their desire to explore alternative sales channels, such as SHGs, to make the venture more sustainable.
The center’s General Secretary, Subhangini Sahu, shared the story of how the institution came into being. “An 18-year-old intellectually disabled child sits at home and feels lonely, agitated, and confused. Therefore, we, along with some parents, have started this institution for vocational training of intellectually disabled children with our own efforts,” she said.
The efforts of these children and their parents are truly inspiring, and their creations are a testament to the fact that everyone has the ability to shine with the right support and cooperation. As Diwali approaches, these beautiful lamps and candles are sure to light up homes and hearts alike.
