Bhubaneswar: The annual native bird census began across various areas of Bhitarkanika National Park and Sanctuary under the Rajnagar Forest Division in Kendrapara district on Thursday.
As per reports, the three-day cenus will be conducted at Mathaadia, Durgaprasad Dia and Lakshmi Prasad Dia areas of the park. Four teams of the Forest Department have been deployed for the exercise, with each team comprising four to five forest personnel. The census is being carried out under the leadership of ornithologists. The forest department personnel were given training for the census yesterday. The counting will be conducted from 6 am to 12 pm every day.
Around 10 species of birds, including Gendalia (Asian Openbill), Dabentia, Anjana, Khaira, Panikua (Little Cormorant), Majhia Baga, Chhota Baga, Rani Baga, Kapar Khai and Andharia Baga will be counted during the drive, said sources.
