Bhubaneswar: A local court in Bhubaneswar has sentenced three persons to life imprisonment in connection with the brutal 2014 murder and dismemberment of a man whose body parts were recovered from the Daya River near Nathapur Ghat.

Additional District Judge Himanshu Sekhar Mallick pronounced the final verdict and convicted Sanjay Khuntia, Bharat Sahu and Sagar Prusti in the case before awarding them life imprisonment.

According to case records, five pieces of a human body were recovered from the Nathapur Ghat area of the Daya River on November 4, 2014. Subsequently, Dhauli Police Station registered a case on November 21 and launched an investigation into the incident.

Police investigation later revealed that the victim, identified as Sona alias Sonu alias Kritibas Parija, had allegedly been kidnapped, brutally murdered, dismembered and the body parts dumped in the river in an attempt to destroy evidence.

Investigators identified the recovered body parts as those of Sonu following forensic examination and DNA testing conducted on his parents, police sources said.

After examining evidence and hearing arguments in the case, the court found all three accused guilty and awarded them life imprisonment.
