Three Maoists, Including Two Women, Surrender in Odisha’s Kandhamal

Phulbani: In a major breakthrough for Odisha’s anti-Maoist campaign, three Maoists, including two women, surrendered to security forces in Kandhamal district on Monday, citing disillusionment with the Maoist organization’s unethical practices. The surrender took place against the backdrop of heightened operations targeting Maoist activities in the region.

Southern Range Inspector General (IG) Niti Sekhar identified the surrendered Maoists as Maade Beti alias Champa, Raju Dodi alias Ajaya, and Adamo Madhavi alias Manju, all part of the Chhattisgarh cadre operating in Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Boudh districts. The trio was allegedly involved in anti-development activities and extremist operations in these areas.

IG Sekhar revealed that the Maoists were driven to surrender due to frustration with ongoing issues within the organization, including sexual harassment of female cadres, extortion through intimidation, and the recruitment of young boys and girls through false promises and propaganda.

As per the rehabilitation policies of the Central and Odisha State Governments, the surrendered Maoists will receive support for reintegration into society, including assistance with livelihood opportunities and social rehabilitation, Sekhar stated.

This development follows a recent encounter in the Baliguda area of Kandhamal, where two Maoists were killed during an exchange of fire with security forces.

“The Maoist presence in Kandhamal, Boudh, and Kalahandi is significantly declining due to sustained anti-Maoist operations,” Sekhar noted, estimating that only around 50 Maoists remain active in these districts.
