Bhubaneswar: Panic gripped Shishu Mandir at the Nilagiri area of Balasore district after a sudden swarm of honeybees attacked staff and students on Thursday morning.
Three teachers — one male and two female — were seriously injured in the incident and have been admitted to Nilagiri Hospital. A girl student also sustained injuries from the bee stings. The injured teachers have been identified as Krushna Chandra Hota, Prabhamanjari Nayak and Deeptimayi Prusti.
According to reports, the attack occurred when Krushna Chandra Hota, a teacher from the Gopinathpur area, was entering the school premises along with his daughter. A swarm of honeybees suddenly attacked the girl. When Hota rushed to save her, the bees turned aggressive and began chasing and stinging him. In the ensuing chaos, two other female teachers who tried to help were also attacked by the swarm. All three teachers suffered severe bee stings and are undergoing treatment at Nilagiri Hospital. Condition of Hota is stated to be critical.
As a precautionary measure for the safety of students and staff, the school authorities declared a holiday on Thursday.
The reason behind the sudden aggression of the bees is yet to be ascertained.
